The Department of Communication wanted to share a huge THANK YOU to Mason COMM faculty member Dr. Anne Nicotera for all of her hard work and dedication to Mason COMM as the department Chair.  Dr. Nicotera’s tenure as Chair of the Department of Communication has come to an end and she will be on a much deserved break this year, but she will return to the Mason COMM faculty next year to teach!

This past April, the Department of Communication hosted the D.C. Health COMM Conference. The 2023 theme was “Health Communication for a Changing World”. The conference speaker was Mason COMM faculty and Director of the Center for Climate Change Communication, Dr. Ed Maibach.

The Department of Communication is so proud of alum Tony Skinn (Communication, 06') on being named the new head coach of the Mason men's basketball program!

On Friday, March 31, three of #MasonCOMM’s brightest stars presented their Honors in Communication Research (COMM 490/491) findings at the annual Eastern Communication Association’s (ECA) 114th conference in Baltimore, MD. Tashianna Patterson, Mariam Masood, and Amberly Silva-Arriaga each presented their original research study in a 75-minute poster session to students and faculty from around the nation.

Nicolette Freeman spent time with Prof Jannery's COMM 369: Multimedia Storytelling Class. In this session Freeman shared with students her path to success and discussed her chapter in the book, Luminary Leadership: How Top Entrepreneurs Lead in Business and Life.

Four years ago, Brad Byrne walked across the stage of EagleBank Arena for his high school graduation. This week, he will once more cross the EagleBank stage as a George Mason University graduate.

Vincent Vinh Nguyen and Julian Lee, two students in the media production and criticism concentration in the Department of Communication, were recognized for excellent student productions by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, National Capitol/Chesapeake Bay Chapter.

“NASA has given me the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself,” said Chang. “During my internship, I’ve been able to communicate my love of space, science, and discovery to those who haven’t found that spark yet, while furthering NASA’s mission and vision.”

"I was inspired. Seeing it in person made me feel more motivated," said Margarita Orange, a junior whose concentration is in Media Production. "It just confirmed everything that I'm doing."

For two Mason freshmen, Megan Rodak ‘26, BA Global Affairs, and University Scholar Nathan Stolzenfeld ‘26, BA Government and International Politics, March meant not only keeping up their respective 3.7 and 4.0 GPAs during midterms, but also preparing to win two national debate titles.  

The Stearns Center Teachers of Distinction are faculty members who are finalists for the Teaching Excellence Award, and who are recognized across campus for their exceptional teaching and their commitment to teaching-related activities.
