Thanks to Kathryn Mangus and Jason Hartsel at Mason Student Media and Stephenie Overman at SPJ Region 2 for organizing a wonderful conference on Mason's campus on April 13, 2024. Students and faculty from George Mason, as well as from a number of other universities in the region, met and learned from dozens of experienced journalism practitioners and scholars. MasonCOMM had a strong presence in the conference programming.

On June 22, George Mason University communication student Viviana Smith was recognized by the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences with the Betty Endicott Scholarship, a prestigious honor for students who excel academically and demonstrate a commitment to ethical journalism and community service.

Mason Communication Alumna, Kaylyn Barnhart (BA Communication 2024), has recently accepted a position as an Editor for the website of the Stars and Stripes newspaper.

Mason placed 2nd out of almost sixty schools, edging out teams from the University of Alabama, Bradley University, University of Illinois-Chicago, Cornell University and the University of Nebraska Lincoln.

This tour, typically organized by concentration coordinator David Miller in various production courses, including Broadcast Journalism and Multicamera Studio Production course, was made possible by Bonnie Wood, the Community/Public Affairs Director of 7News On Your Side/WJLA 24/7News.

Dr. Wendy Riemann, Mason Communication PhD alum 2022, has had her research published in the Journal of Qualitative Research in Medicine and Healthcare. Her scholarly journal article is about social support and broken marriage engagements. 

Kaylyn reflected on her experience, "Writing this article was such a great opportunity to be given, and I made great connections from it. I am so excited to tell more great stories like this one, as an intern for the Fairfax County Times and in my future endeavors as a working journalist one day."

Professors David J. Miller and Justin Ramsdell have received the 2024 Anthology Catalyst Award for Student Success for their innovative use of Anthology solutions in implementing a co-regulated approach using Blackboard. 

In the ever-evolving landscape of higher education, effective leadership is crucial for fostering innovation, creating change, and nurturing the next generation of students. Fourteen years ago, Mason began a faculty development program designed to cultivate leadership skills among employees. On Friday, April 19, 2024, Dr. Catherine Wright completed the 9-month-long program with her cohort of 29 others from across the University.

In celebration of International Women's Day, Iccha Basnyat, associate professor of global health communication in the Department of Global Affairs with a joint appointment in the Department of Communication, discusses what sparked her passion for women's representation in health communication and what it is like to be a researcher in the field.

Professor Rodger Smith visited South Forsyth High School in Cumming, GA on August 12, 2024 where he discussed post-secondary and industry opportunities in the world of media and communications
