Communication Faculty listed as recipients in Sterns Center 2023-2024 Inclusive Excellence in Teaching (IET) programming

Congratulations to the following Department of Communication faculty members, Shelby Broberg, Richard Craig, and Pratiti Diddi, who have made accomplishments in the Inclusive Excellence in Teaching (IET) programming this past 2023-2024 academic year!

The accomplishments are listed below from the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning:

The Stearns Center offers several types of IET programming which are described below with participants listed:

AY 2023-2024 IET Grant Recipients

Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning, in conjunction with support from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and in collaboration with Mason colleges and schools creating Inclusive Excellence Plans, is pleased to provide support and opportunities for faculty to improve curriculum design, teaching strategies, and pedagogical resources supporting broadly inclusive teaching. In AY23-24, this program approved and provided funding to projects supporting broadly inclusive teaching and curriculum redesign strategies, with opportunities for high impact courses and curriculum grants.

Spring 2024 IET Mini-Grants

To aid in scaling-up broadly inclusive teaching efforts across campus, a similar funding mechanism as described above enabled us to offer mini-grants to allow grantees to invest in expanding in-progress projects to effectively increase local capacity for faculty learning, course- or curriculum-development, or pedagogy-related programming. These grantees were tasked with designing and implementing projects with a “ripple out” effect that had a sustainable, broad impact. Mini-grantees were awarded up to $3,000. We celebrate the following recipients:

AY 2023-2024 Campus Champions

Our second cohort of Campus Champions were faculty from across all ranks and types across all disciplines. They were asked to attend workshops, review online resources, and participate in one or a few focus group sessions to provide feedback on programming. Campus Champions benefitted from developing or increasing their community connections across the institution, increasing their leadership skills in this space, and gaining current insights on teaching practices. The Campus Champions are a growing network of change agents in the teaching and learning space, creating successful classroom and educational environments that support all students and faculty. We enthusiastically recognize these participants:

AY 2023-2024 First Year Five Finishers

The Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning invited new faculty (or recently hired faculty) to join our First Year Five program to increase their own capacities as instructors while building a network of similarly invested colleagues across the university, starting in their very first weeks at Mas on. The faculty listed here identified and reflected on five hours of work designed to improve the broadly inclusive instructional strategies they use to teach at Mason. This could be attending relevant departmental workshops, discipline-based programming, orientation sessions, or Stearns Center workshops, as well as reading journal articles, chapters, and/or books that discuss inclusive pedagogical practice, and beyond.
