Sophie is a senior communication major with an emphasis in media production and criticism, and is a summer social media intern at monthly regional magazine, Northern Virginia Magazine. They provide print, digital, and social media coverage of what to eat, what to do, and where to go, along with feature stories and profiles of the fascinating personalities in the Northern Virginia region and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Sophie works closely with the Senior Video Content Producer and the Social Media Strategist on a daily basis. Her position allows her to expand knowledge in digital marketing, and apply learning from her Mason courses in media production. Some of her tasks include:
• researching current events and local personalities in the Northern Virginia region,
• capturing of high-quality photos and video for the magazine’s social media and website,
• creating eye-catching graphics that summarize articles,
• collaborating with the social media teams to plan and produce trendy content, and
• editing, organizing, and producing plans for film shoots, scripts, and interviews.
With each task, Sophie better understands the process for social media representation of a brand and connecting a region through diverse representation and coverage of local events. She anticipates continuing her employment at the magazine after graduation and feels confident that the skills she learns will help her secure employment in the future.
