FAIRFAX, Va. — On May 3, 2025, the Lecture Hall Auditorium at George Mason University was filled with energy as students, faculty, and families came together for the annual Media Production Screening and Awards. The excitement and pride were palpable as attendees took their seats, ready to celebrate the creative talents of their peers. Julian David Lee, a member of the Class of 2024, hosted the event and welcomed everyone with enthusiasm. This celebration showcased students' remarkable projects and artistic achievements in media production courses during the 2024-2025 academic year, highlighting their hard work and creativity in an engaging atmosphere.

The evening unfolded as a transformative journey, a rich tapestry of storytelling and resilience that captivated around 65 eager attendees. It was more than just a showcase; it turned into a celebration of creativity, determination, and the bright, emerging talents that inspire us all.

"Seeing my work showcased on a big screen in front of a real audience was both exhilarating and a little daunting," said Subihi Setiwaldi, one of the featured creators. "The feedback I got was not only encouraging but also surprisingly thoughtful. It reminded me why I enjoy storytelling and visual media in the first place."

The event unveiled several new categories, such as Passion Projects, which allowed students to explore their interests; Environmental Films, which focused on raising awareness about environmental issues; and Documentaries, which provided a platform for students to delve into real-life stories and topics. These new categories highlighted the students' creativity and ability to use media production for social change. Seven students earned Honorable Mentions, while Adam Roth, Sophie Sanders, and Zaina Malik received awards for their Emerging Excellence in Media Production.

For Layla Salvucci, receiving this recognition was profoundly meaningful. "Being publicly acknowledged for my achievements is something I've never experienced before," she reflected in her emotion-filled voice. "This honor exemplifies not only the respect people have for my work but also reignites my passion and determination. It motivates me to push the boundaries and strive for excellence in my upcoming projects, inspiring me to aim even higher."

The screening provided a platform for recognition and offered a valuable opportunity for personal growth and empowerment. Abigail Nixon, who had two of her videos featured, described the experience as transformative. "It was such a confidence booster," she said. "After the screening ended, I wanted to create something bigger and better."
"Don't wait until the last minute," Salvucci advised, offering practical guidance. "And for those contemplating submitting your projects—just do it! You never know if you don't try." This advice reflects the students' dedication to their work and belief in taking risks and seizing opportunities in media production.

Setiwaldi underscored the crucial value of embracing the journey in media production. "Intro to media production [COMM 208] pushes you to your limits—but in the best possible ways," she asserted. "Take risks, maintain your curiosity, and create for yourself; the discoveries you make will astonish you."

As the applause rang out in appreciation of each screened project, it was laced with a profound sense of renewal.  Each individual left with a sense of accomplishment and a deep-seated belief in their potential and the endless possibilities that lay ahead.

The message is powerful for students aspiring to pursue media production: take your work seriously, embrace the journey, and recognize the immense strength of your voice.
