Mason COMM Intern of the Week (Spring Break Edition!)

Mariam Shafik is a junior at Mason majoring in communication with concentrations in public relations and interpersonal communication. She is a Spring 2023 intern at the U.S. Department of State in the Bureau of Administration.  The State Department is one of the oldest federal agencies in the U.S. and is responsible for overseeing foreign affairs and international relations.  The Department represents the U.S. in international organizations such as the United Nations and advises the President on issues that concern global matters. Mariam works with a senior advisor of the front office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration.  Her tasks cater to her academic interests and major concentration.

General duties include:

·         assisting with DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) initiatives,

·         drafting bureau-wide orientation guides, and

·         note-taking for meetings.

Each of these tasks, along with projects specifically designated to complement her major concentration, allow Mariam to gain a broader understanding of her major and apply her learning in a professional environment. Working in an international agency also allows her to develop a deeper understanding of intercultural communication.
