Concentration Week: Getting to Know Them & How They Can Work For You!

If you enjoy writing, being creative, artistic and speaking in front of people; working through tough problems and working with people, a career in Public Relations (PR) might be a great choice for you!  This field is one that combines a lot of what people think about when they think about Communication:  excellence in writing and speaking.  The best thing?  Everyone needs public relations practitioners to keep their business moving forward and growing.

Our week’s short series looks at Public Relations by telling you what it is, what you’ll study, and what kinds of jobs you can get after graduation!  We’ll also give you the concentration coordinator’s contact information so you can ask the more questions!  Please make it a point to reach out to Phil Wilkerson in Career Services.  He is an excellent resource for internships, jobs, and grad school information.

PR is one of those fields where having strong communication skills is essential.  As a practitioner, you’ll be expected to have strong writing skills, excellent people skills, and the ability to look at a problem and solve it creatively.  If you have an interest on any of those elements, earning your PR concentration through Mason will give you the foundation to begin the career you’ve always hoped for!   We will teach you how to do these things, and more, while honing and sharpening the skills you already have!

Those who choose to study PR at Mason can take courses such as COMM 331 (PR Campaigns), COMM 335 (Organizational Communication), COMM 375 (Mass COMM Advertising & Promotions), COMM 384 (PR and Social Media), COMM 390 (Issues in PR), COMM 391 (Writing for PR), and COMM 433 (Environmental Communication).

Here is a link to our Concentration Folder (https://online.fliphtml5.com/rsrj/smvc/)  Of course, there are other classes and more information about this concentration you can find here:  2020-2021 Public Relations Concentration  The Concentration Coordinator is Dr. Sojung Kim (skim205@gmu.edu). She’ll be happy to answer your questions!

There are numerous jobs you can obtain with a degree that focuses on Public Relations.  In a quick review, I found about 180 words/phrases, but will not list them all here.  Think about jobs that involve working with people in a myriad of situations and you’ll be well on your way.  I’ve put a list of careers at the end of this for your perusal.

Studying Communication is exciting and as you read through the posts this week, you’ll discover that much of what you read will cross over into other concentrations here at Mason.  Think about how a major or a minor in Communication will help set YOU on a path to success!
