GMU Has Big Results at the Biggest All-Events Tournament of the Year

Season starts with successful weekend at Naval Academy

The Mason Debate Team has kicked off the spring semester with a bang. From January 17-20, the full squad traveled to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. On varsity, David Michael Woodward and Isaac Brown advanced to the octo-final round; Kyle Lastovica and Young Kwon were in the final round. The varsity team also earned two speaker awards: Young was 5th speaker and Kyle was 2nd speaker. On JV, all 3 teams earned awards. JV speakers Erica Jalbuena and Manraj Nijjar were in the octo-final round; Paula Kostuik and Lizbett Mendozza were in the quarter-final round; Luke Melton and Michelle Thomas were in the semi-final round. The JV debaters also earned speaker awards: Paula was 7th speaker and Lizbett was 5th speaker. On novice, GMU also cleared all 3 teams into elimination rounds as well: Dillon Caldwell and Andre Massa were in the octo-final round; Rich Kaye and Austin Oliver were in the quarter-final round; Tyler Wiseman and Nouran Ghanem were in the final round. The novice debaters earned 3 speaker awards: Tyler was 9th speaker, Austin was 4th speaker and Rich was 2nd speaker. Overall, the GMU team had the best showing of any other university that attended the Navy tournament.
