Joe Little, BA Speech Communication ’98, was recently awarded a 2011 Emmy Award for On-Camera Reporter Composite from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Pacific Southwest Chapter.
Little has been with 10News in San Diego since 2007, following stints as a news reporter and anchor in Hagerstown, Maryland; Johnstown, Pennsylvania; and Carlsbad, California. He has a unique “one-man-band” reporting style: writing, reporting, shooting, and editing pieces on his own, without separate camera or sound support.
Little credits Mason for giving him the foundation to launch his career. He notes that the technical skills necessary for his work were “set in motion” during his years at Mason, both in his communication classes and while interning with GMU-TV.
“I got my master’s degree at Syracuse,” he said. “There, I was able to concentrate on the journalism side of it, because I was light years ahead of my classmates on the technical side.”
Little’s Emmy Award, for On-Camera Reporter Composite, is given based on an overall body of work for 2011. A sample of his news work shows his unique and engaging style. When not on in front of the camera, he has also been teaching journalism at San Diego State University and mentoring aspiring journalists from all over the world, passing on his expertise and creativity to the next generation of media professionals.
