Communication Student Spotlight: Philip Wilkerson III
Phil Wilkerson

Philip Wilkerson, a PhD student in the Department of Communication, has been awarded the MARIE Grant for 2024-2025, supporting his research on equitable access at George Mason University. One of his key projects investigates the recruitment, retention, and resilience of Black Male Faculty and Staff. His research, conducted with fellow PhD student Zikun Li, reveals that while Black Male Faculty and Staff tend to have positive experiences at GMU, those whose personal missions align with the university's mission feel a stronger sense of belonging and purpose. Philip is also an Employer Engagement Consultant in University Career Services, where he excels in connecting employers with Mason’s diverse talent. His research is supported by Dr. Sammy Steen, Department Chair within the Counseling Program with the College of Education and Human Development from which Philip obtain his master's in counseling back in 2012.
