Fall Communication Career Forum helps #MasonCOMM student land a paid internship with WashingtonExec
Students attend the Fall 2022 Communication Career Forum mentoring sessions.

With the Fall 2022 semester coming to a close, the Department of Communication would like to reflect on our favorite event that we host annually, the Communication Career Forum. Just like in 2021, the 2022 forum focused on smaller mentoring sessions where students could hop from one session to another and network with communication industry professionals that were brought in by the Department's Insight Committee.

Students not only gain networking and interviewing skills from these mentoring sessions, but also potential internships. The latter is exactly what happened to #MasonCOMM student, Annika Urps. Urp's informed her COMM 204 professor, Dr. Sojung Kim, about how she gained a paid internship at WashingtonExec after networking with one of the mentors, JD Kathuria. (JD Kathuria, was a mentor at the forum and is not only a Mason Alum ('95) but also the founder and president of WashingtonExec.)

Annika Urps

Annika described her experience with the following, "I got my internship at WashingtonExec through the COMM Department's Career Fall Forum. Those who were speakers provided their LinkedIn and I was able to connect with them there about future employment opportunities, and luckily my current employers were searching for new interns.  I connected with them, set up an interview, and was hired. Without this forum connecting me with these wonderful people, I would have never found an internship like this".

She also described what she does as an intern, "All interns are GMU students, and I got the chance to shadow a fellow Communication/PR major, Angel, on Friday at the office and at one of the events. As an intern, I help make the nametags, help set up the check-in for the events, and help check in the guests at the events".

#MasonCOMM is extremely proud of Annika for getting the internship and excited for her future. The Department works hard with the GMU Insight Committee to host the annual Communication Career Forum so students can gain career building opportunities.
