Advancing Journalism at George Mason University

At a time when traditional journalism has come and gone, George Mason University students have an opportunity to create the future of content and storytelling. At Mason we are advancing our Journalism advising in innovative ways to include branding, digital content, digital marketing, start-up growth, content and DEIA business and reporting incubators. Beth Jannery, rejoined the Department of Communication this year and is reinvigorating what it means to study journalism at Mason.

What follows is a snapshot of Communication Cases highlighting the work the Journalism program is engaged in: 2022 -2024. We believe in advancing student development and faculty professional development inside and outside of the classroom. We are looking at ways to bridge the classroom and the workplace with innovative ideas.

This week we highlight

Leche Magazine

Advising Mason student Francisco Ochoa on branding, strategy, and all aspects of a magazine start-up for his Spanish-launched culture and arts magazine. The next volume is expected in Winter/Spring 2023. Coordinating Mason students collaboration, digital marketing, branding, content creation, advertorials, business development and publication of Leche Magazine. Seeking avenues for funding or seed money to help the project lift.

Mission Statement: To inspire creatives and to give them a platform to show off what they’re passionate about.

Vision statement: One day we will have built a global publication and all types of people will use us as an opportunity to grow.

Goal: Franscico doesn’t want a traditional office job. He plans to launch the magazine full-time after Mason graduation and the Department of Communication advising is instrumental in supporting his vision.

Communication students earn experience working at a start-up and on Leche Magazine. Company name: Why Leche? It was the Promise to take the Israelites to a land of “milk and honey.” In Spanish it says “la tierra de Leche y Miel.” This land is known as the promised land. Leche Magazine will be the promised land for artists and creative types inspired by the Leche community. It is a hard-copy, stylish and glossy culture mag, with a visual element starting soon. Beth Jannery is working with the student on advising about strategy, storytelling and messaging.
