Mason's Forensics Team Takes Second Place at Nationals

Mason’s Forensics Team was recently awarded second place in the nation at the American Forensics Association National Speech Tournament (AFA-NST) with several students receiving individual honors. 

Mason’s Forensics Team has been the most successful team in the university’s history, continuously ranking in the national top 35 schools every year since 1975, the top five schools each year since 2007, and even garnering the National Championship in 1979. 

The team is coached by Director Dawn Lowry (Instructor, College of Humanities and Social Sciences) and Assistant Director Tyler Watkins (Instructor, College of Humanities and Social Sciences), as well as graduate students Brenna Fuhr and Peter Figueroa, and Kate Polit and Lucas Muratore

The AFA-NST hosts 11 different events in which students compete.

Overall tournament individual winners included:

  • José Quinones: 20th place;
  • Izzie Larson: 18th place; and
  • Eleni Mercer: 11th place. 

Eleni Mercer and Izzie Larson were named national champions in the DUO event.
