Honors Student Spotlight: Martincic's Research Looks at Female Political Candidates of Color

#MasonCOMM is happy to share the research that our COMM Honors students are currently working on in COMM 491.

Savannah Martincic’s research is about news coverage of female political candidates of color. She will be presenting it at the Eastern Communication Association’s Undergraduate Scholars Conference this spring.

Relying on framing theory, Savannah’s project explores patterns of gender- and race-based frames in the coverage of eight female candidates of color during the 2018 midterm election. By analyzing online articles from four news sources, Savannah hopes to identify how these female candidates of color were portrayed through text and images during this historic election cycle.
