Media Production and Criticism

Concentration Week: Getting to Know Them & How They Can Work For You!

When you think of a news source, what comes to mind?  Good reporting?  Good camera work?  An understanding of the world around us?  These are only three of numerous things that you can study in the Media Production & Criticism (MPC) concentration at Mason.

This week’s short series looks at the Media Production & Criticism concentration by telling you what it is, what you’ll study, and what kinds of jobs you can get after graduation!  We’ll also give you the concentration coordinator’s contact information so you can ask the more questions!  Please make it a point to reach out to Phil Wilkerson in Career Services.  He is an excellent resource for internships, jobs, and grad school information.

The Media Production & Criticism concentration at Mason is an exciting area to study because you are exposed to quality videography skills, excellent editing and production skills, and the ability to critically analyze a variety of media.  Students can choose three ways to approach this concentration:  focusing on media production, focusing on media criticism, or combining the best of both.  This allows the student to focus on what their interests are while creating for them a solid foundation that will easily transfer into jobs after graduation.

Those who choose to study MPC at Mason can take production courses such COMM 208 (Intro to Media Production), COMM 360 (Digital Postproduction), COMM 358 (Multi-camera Studio Production), COMM 354 (Radio Production & Podcasting); COMM 353 (Broadcast Journalism), COMM 366 (Visual Communication), and COMM 364 (Videography).  They can also look at criticism courses such as COMM 380 (Media Criticism), COMM 350 (Mass Communication & Public Policy), COMM 359 (Media Management), COMM 367 (Children & the Media), and COMM 375 (Mass Comm Advertising & Promotion).

Here is a link to our Concentration Folder (https://fliphtml5.com/rsrj/gwuh  Of course, there are other classes and more information about this concentration you can find here:  2020-2021 Media Production & Criticism Concentration  The Concentration Coordinator is Prof. David Miller (dmillef@gmu.edu).  He’ll be happy to answer your questions!

There are numerous jobs you can obtain with a degree that focuses on Media Production & Criticism.  In a quick review, I found well over 200 words/phrases, but will not list them all here.  I’ve put a list of careers at the end of this for your perusal.

Studying Communication is exciting and as you read through the posts this week, you’ll discover that much of what you read will cross over into other concentrations here at Mason.  Think about how a major or a minor in Communication will help set YOU on a path to success!
