COMM Summer Intern of the Week

Claire Underwood is a rising senior at GMU majoring in Communications with a concentration in journalism, as well as a double minor in Environmental Science and Spanish.  She is a summer 2019 intern at the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) located in Arlington, VA.  C2ES is a non-profit and non-partisan organization which collaborates with businesses and policymakers to create better environmental policies. Claire works with the communications director, where she is developing her writing skills and following her passion of environmental communication.  Some of Claire’s tasks are:

  • Send out morning summaries of the day’s top climate-related news
  • Assist with planning next year’s Climate Leadership Conference

(edit advertisements, select promotional photos, social media postings)

  • Build a spreadsheet with information on every business affiliate and the efforts that they are taking to change their policies
  • Compile all of the previous talking points (interviews, press releases, event speeches) into categories to be used in the future
  • Attend meetings with various co-workers to learn one-on-one about their roles in the organization

In addition to the work in the office, Claire appreciates that she gets to attend various events in DC.  She has already been able to assist with the organization of a conference, attended a workshop, and soon will get to experience a hearing at the U.S. Senate.
