Mary Beatty is a rising senior communication major with a concentration in media production. She is a Summer 2019 intern at Arlington Independent Media (AIM), a nonprofit membership organization and community media center in Arlington, Virginia. The Arlington studio is equipped with the latest in media-making tools and also operates as a TV and radio station (WERA-LP 96.7 FM). Mary’s immediate supervisor is the director of operations.
Some of Mary’s tasks for the summer include:
- hands-on production room experience to learn broadcast operations and producing
- in front of the camera reporting as an anchorwoman for Arlington Weekly News
- assisting with marketing on social media and some front desk duties
- producing mini-movies about AIM’s summer activities.
With each new task and project, Mary will dive headfirst into the realm of radio, television, and video-editing. This is a slightly new world for this former nursing student. The internship provides Mary with a flexible arena to grasp new content and explore new talents, which she hopes to use upon graduation.
