Majoring in communication and putting his film studies minor into practice, Michael spent part of his first year at Mason volunteering with the DC Independent Film Festival and with Filmfest DC, two long-standing local celebrations of independent filmmaking.

At the same time, he maintained an exceptional grade point average and worked with the Mason Cable Network. He found that the full workload taught him an important lesson in the art of balance. "It is imperative to stay focused and maintain a balance between academics and extracurriculars," he found. "Otherwise, you'll lack in one (if not both) of those fields."

Professor Tatevik Gevorgyan, who taught Michael's Gateway to Advanced Spanish course, agrees, describing Michael as "an enthusiastic learner and a solid, responsible, hard-working student."
