COMM 372: Sports and the Media

COMM 372-DL1: Sports and the Media
(Spring 2019)

10:30 AM to 11:45 AM M

David J. King Hall 1011B - Hybrid

Section Information for Spring 2019

Attention: We watch the Super Bowl in this class! :)

In Sports and the Media, we dive into what goes into televised sports broadcasts...everything from producing the contest, play-by-play skills and even the on-screen graphics. We look at emerging trends in sports media: This includes where you find the content (we cover the impact of OTT - or over the top - platforms such as ESPN+).

This is a closer look at the sports telecast you watch...much of it behind the scenes.

Overall, we examine the role sports plays in our culture and how the media deliver sports to us.

We have guest speakers from the world of sports media. Past guest speakers have included Michelle McMahon of the Big Ten Network and Chicago Blackhawks, Jorge Andres of CBS Interactive (a Mason Comm grad) and USA Today Senior Fantasy Sports Editor Steve Gardner. A full line-up of guest speakers will be announced on the first day of class and throughout the semester.

This is a hybrid online course. The class meets once a week (Mondays at 10:30) for student presentations and guest speakers. All lectures, written assignments and tests are available online.

COMM 372 DL1 is a distance hybrid section that meets in class and online asynchronously. The first class meeting in January also meets online. See syllabus for details.
