Section Information for Fall 2018

Welcome to Broadcast Journalism! In this three-credit course you will learn to write, shoot and edit news packages for broadcast. You’ll develop field reporting and interviewing skills, and you’ll gain practical experience crafting accurate, responsible and engaging video news stories.

This course emphasizes the unique writing style of electronic media journalists – concise and conversational “writing to picture” and “writing for the ear.” While this course emphasizes a “how to” approach, it is not limited to it. We will also examine the technical and ethical challenges that reporters, writers and producers face every day.

You do NOT need prior camera or editing experience to take this course! We start from scratch in here. I will show you how to operate handheld professional-quality video cameras, compose shots and use nonlinear editing software to craft your stories. If you’re someone who feels uncomfortable with technology and equipment, please don’t panic. Technology can be learned! My aim is for you to experience a growing level of confidence during the semester.
