Section Information for Fall 2017

This course introduces students to the general processes involved in the translation to and from the French language. Through the exploration of various translation genres (e.g., journalistic and literary) and their most common challenges (e.g., lexical selection, syntactic organization, and cross-cultural equivalences), students will have the opportunity to enhance not only their knowledge of French grammar, vocabulary, and stylistics, but also their awareness of the French culture.

By the end of the semester, students will not only acquire a better understanding of theories in translation studies, but also hands-on experience in translating texts from French to English and vice versa. Among other skills, students will be able to identify translation units, recognize idiomatic expressions in French, explain common types of errors in translation exercises, and use adequate methods for undertaking translation projects.
