Technology and social media have altered the way public relations has been practiced for the past 100 years. Global leaders in public relations, advertising and marketing are refreshing their business models to focus on integrated digital communication. Content marketing, brand journalism and native advertising are propelling widespread changes in the field and today's PR professional is working with media that is paid, earned, owned and shared.  Social media engagement with publics has moved from being the shiny new object to a staple of strategic communication. This is a survey course in contemporary public relations and social media engagement designed for students of all majors.  The course will introduce students to the disciplined, research-based and objective-driven process of public relations.  Students will analyze organization websites, social media and engagement practices to identify the guiding objectives and strategies.  Finally, the course will show students how their social media consumption and skill at a personal level can become a professional, strategic engagement skill.
